Eye
lift, or Blepharoplasty
" Brighter eyes "

|

Rather than a long text,
we thought we would answer
the most commonly-asked
questions as concretely
and objectively as possible.
Dr Frederic Sarfati answers
your questions

I) Before treatment
Back
|
1. Why would I have an eye lift ? |
|
« With age, the eyelid skin droops and the eyes tend to lose
their sparkle as they
are drowned in folds of
loose skin. »
|
2. How will you find out what I need ?
|
|
« Before treatment we discuss what would be suitable. We use both recent
and older photos and remorph
them so I can advise you
on how we get a nice natural-looking
result that fits with your
face. » |
3.
Will
an eye lift make my eyes
look younger ? How long
will the effects last ? |
|
« By removing the bags under and over the eyes, we refresh them and add
light; smoothing the surrounding
skin adds to their beauty,
so we get a more youthful-looking
face. These effects will
last about 10 years, depending
on your life-style. »
|
4.
How
will you get natural-looking
results ? |
|
« I work on the eyelid's imperfections, being careful not to change the
eye's initial shape, which
is a potential danger
in this type of treatment.
We actually should not
try to take out every
wrinkle, as this can pull
the eye out of shape sideways,
giving an undesirable
hangdog expression. »
|
5.
Do I need a medical examination before treatment ?
|
|
« During
your preparatory consultation
with the anaesthetist
or the surgeon, we will
ask you for the results
of a general medical examination,
to spot any medical contraindications.
And you should take no
aspirin or anti inflammatory
medicines for ten days
prior to your visit. »

II ) During treatment :
Back
|
6.
How
long will I stay at the
clinic ?
|
|
« Most visits are just for the day. »
|
7.
How long will the operation take ?
|
|
« 2 eyelids
take 45 minutes, and four
take one and a half -one
and three quarter hours.
»
|
8.
What kind of anaesthetic do you recommend ?
|
|
« We would normally use a local
anaesthetic, Xylocaine,
around the eyes, which
effectively removes all
sensation. General anaesthetic
is not really necessary,
unless the patient especially
asks for this additional
comfort. »
|
9.
What will happen during the treatment ? |
|
« For
the upper lid we take
out fatty substances weighing
down the inside third
of the eyelid. We also
remove some skin and muscle
there, which enlarges
the eye and makes using
make-up easier. For the
lower lid, when there
is not much muscular or
skin droop, we remove
the bags contents through
the inside of the lid.
This leaves no visible
marks at all. Where there
is droop, we need to reduce
eyelid volume by taking
out pockets of fat from
behind the muscle. This
tightens the skin and
muscle and gives the lid
a younger shape. »
|
10.
What will the risks be ?
|
|
« Swelling and bruising are not so much
risks as certainties in
eye lift surgery. It tends
to go away between four
and 12 days after treatment.
Haematomas are much rarer.
Infection is kept at bay
using antibiotics before
for two days to five days
after. »
|
11.
What risks of phlebitis (deep vein thrombosis)
are there ?
|
|
« There is a very low risk
of phlebitis for this
type of treatment. It
consists of a blood clot
appearing in the deep
veins of the leg, which
can detach and move to
the lungs, causing a lung
embolism. We can effectively
deal with this risk using
anti-coagulants and support
stockings during your
whole stay. During the
treatment, we also do
leg massages. So far,
we have had no cases of
phlebitis at all. »

III )
After treatment

|
12.
Will we see any scars ?
|
|
« On the upper lid, no scars are visible when the eye
is open, as they are lodged
in the skin fold. When
the eye is shut, a fine
white line may be visible.
On the lower lid, a nearly
invisible white line runs
under the lash line, with
a short extension, neatly
hidden in a natural fold. »
|
13.
Will it
be painful ?
|
|
« The
pain registers at about
2.5 out of 10, being discomfort
due to swelling and bruising.
We prescribe arnica 7-15
days before and 15 days
after the treatment. The
discomfort generally goes
after 10 days. »
|
14.
How
quickly will I see the results ?
|
|
« Swelling
and bruising will go after
8-10 days and the final
results will be visible
after two to three weeks,
with the return of full
muscular and skin elasticity. »
|
15. How
often will I need checkups ?
|
|
« You need to be seen after six days to
take out the stitches
from the upper lid. You
need to consult two weeks
and two months afterwards.
We are of course available
to see you at any other
time. »
|
16.
How
will you protect the eye
after the operation, will
I need to wear anything
over my eyes ?
|
|
« The
upper eyelid will be sutured,
which will need removing,
the lower lid stitches
being naturally absorbed.
We usually use Steristrips
for additional support
and protection. A few
hours after the procedure,
we apply serum compresses
to reduce swelling and
bruises. You will not
need to wear anything
else. »
|
17.
What care should I take afterwards ?
|
|
« You will need to regularly apply
cold serum compresses
over a 72 hour period,
to reduce swelling and
bruising. You can shower
after 24 hours and apply
light make up after a
week. »
|
18.
How
soon can I start work again ?
|
|
« You
can go back to work after
48 hours, especially if
you do not have a job
in contact with the public,
or else after 3-10 days. »
|
19.
Do
I have to avoid physical
activity ?
|
|
« Yes,
you can only start sporting
activities again after
one month. »
|
20. Is
this treatment reimbursable
on my health insurance ? |
|
« You
will have to consult your
local health authorities
and your private health
insurers to see if you
can be supported financially
following a serious accident,
for example. »
