The
standard abdominoplasty or tummy
tuck
" A slimmer, shapelier abdomen
"

Rather than a long text,
we thought we would answer
the most commonly-asked
questions as concretely
and objectively as possible.

your questions

I) Before treatment
Back
|
1. Why would I have an tummy tuck ?
|
|
« Any time you are having liposuction if your skin is distended
with stretch-marks or
even scars. »
|
2. How
do you find out what my
needs are ?
|
|
« Before treatment, we discuss what would be suitable. We use both recent
and older photos and remorph
them so I can advise you
on how we get a nice natural-looking
result that fits with your
figure. » |
3.
Does
a tummy tuck really make
my figure look younger ? |
|
« Yes, this procedure gives you a slimmer, shapely, more youthful looking
body. Recent progress
in abdominal plastic surgery
means that we can now
deal with most aesthetic
problems of the abdomen.
You should find you lose
from one to three sizes
and you can once again
wear close-fitting clothes.
»
|
4.
How
do you get natural-looking
results ? |
|
« The general aim is to recreate the curves and valleys that make an abdomen
beautiful. Careful diagnosis
tells us the best way
to do this, depending
on the state of the skin
and of how the distribution
of muscle and fat will
work for us. The by now
well-known procedure is
to remove damaged skin
and use only healthy,
smooth skin to replace
it. »
|
5.
Do I need a medical examination before treatment ?
|
|
« During
your preparatory consultation
with the anaesthetist
or the surgeon, we will
ask you for the results
of a general medical examination
to spot any medical contraindications.
You should take no aspirin
or anti inflammatory medicines
for ten days prior to
your visit. »

II ) During treatment :
Back
|
6.
How
long do I stay at the clinic ? |
|
« Hospitalisation is for 24 hours as we
need to leave the drains
till the day after treatment.
»
|
7.
How long does the operation last ? |
|
« The
operation lasts about
two hours. »
|
8.
What
kind of anaesthetic do you
recommend ? |
|
« A light epidural with neuroleptic-anaesthetic
or else general anaesthetic
is needed for this type
of procedure. »
|
9.
What
happens during the treatment ? |
|
« We tighten the whole abdominal area by
firstly opening the lower
abdomen over the pubic
area and removing excess
fat by liposuction. The
more fat there is to take
out, the longer the scar
will be. We retighten
the muscles and skin,
removing the excess and
the remaining skin is
pulled downwards and secured. »
|
10.
What are the risks ? |
|
« We take all active measures before, during and
after the treatment to
reduce risks to the minimum,
namely of haematoma (a
one in 450 chance) and
infection by prescribing
antibiotics from two days
before to seven days after
treatment as well as taking
surgical measures during
treatment. Sensitivity
in the scar area may be
modified for one or two
years, or much more rarely,
permanently.
Very rarely a lymph pocket
beneath the lower abdomen
skin may swell up later,
requiring lancing. We
recommend stopping smoking
to stop risks of skin
necrosis in or near the
healing tissue . »
|
11.
What risks of phlebitis (deep vein thrombosis)
are there ?
|
|
« There is a very low risk
of phlebitis for this
type of treatment. It
consists of a blood clot
appearing in the deep
veins of the leg, which
can detach and move to
the lungs, causing a lung
embolism. We can effectively
deal with this risk using
anti-coagulants and support
stockings during your
whole stay. During the
treatment, we also do
leg massages. So far,
we have had no cases of
phlebitis at all. »

|
12.
What scars will be visible ?
|
|
« This lift leaves a very fine horizontal scar in the
pubic region about 4cm
above the inverted V of
the vulva, then descends
towards the hips. It is
practically invisible
after a nine month period.
A question mark shaped
scar about an inch long
lies close to the belly
button. 13 to 14 cm of
clear skin separates these
two scars, so you can
wear low waist clothes
showing your lower belly. »
|
| |
|
|
13.
Is it painful ?
|
|
« This
procedure is measured
at around four out of
ten on the pain scale.
Keeping a straight back
and walking upright are
obligatory as from the
day after the operation.
Discomfort gradually disappears
during the first week
and you will be able to
stop the painkillers as
from the second week. »
|
14.
How
soon will I be able to see
the results ? |
|
« You
will see the results immediately
in your shape, but there
will be swelling under
your belly button which
will go down gradually
after two to four months. »
|
| |
 |
|
Results
six months
after an abdominal
tuck.
|
|
|
15. How often will I have to come back for check-ups ?
|
|
« You will need to be seen after two weeks,
a month then two months.
We are of course available
to see you at any other
time. »
|
16.
What
do you do to protect the
treatment zone ? will I
have to wear bandages ? |
|
« You
will need to wear a fitted
surgical corset for two
weeks. This is vital to
support and maintain the
muscles in their new position. »
|
17.
What care should I take afterwards ?
|
|
« There is not much post operational
care to carry out: applying
silicone adhesive strips
to help with cosmetic
healing quality, taking
antibiotics, anticoagulants,
and normal pain-killers
for two weeks. You can
shower as soon as you
like. »
|
18.
How
soon can I start work again ? |
|
« You
can start work after four
days if you have a sedentary
job, otherwise after 12
days. »
|
19.
Should
I avoid physical activity ?
|
|
« You
can start sports activities
only after four to six
weeks and ideally would
start with gentle swimming. »
|
20. Is
this treatment reimbursable
on my health insurance ? |
|
« You
will have to consult your
local health authorities
and your private health
insurers to see if you
can be supported financially
following a serious illness
or congenital deformation,
for example. »
